A Q&A With Meloca Designs
We recently caught up with Megan from the fabulous Meloca Designs, to answer all of our cross stitching questions!
About Meloca Designs
“Meloca Designs is an online craft company, selling modern cross stitch kits and needle minders. We were established in 2017 by Megan Caines, from her love of arts and crafts and her lifelong obsession with stitching. All of our designs are crafted in our home office in Birmingham, United Kingdom! Our cross stitch kits are all packaged by hand and include quality, hand-cut DMC thread and Sampedro aida fabric. We have a variety of different kit types available so you can select kits with embroidery hoops and needle minders. We launched our first needle minder design in 2019, which proved extremely popular, so we have since expanded our range to offer six different needle minder designs, with several more in the works to be released later this year.”
Why did you start your business?
I started Meloca Designs in spring 2017. I had just graduated from University and found that I suddenly had all this free time in the evenings after working my 9-5 job, and I wanted to do something creative, as I had always loved art, needlework and textiles. I had cross stitched on and off as a child and teenager, so I decided on cross stitch. I looked online for kits but couldn’t find anything that was for me, so I decided to create my own design! From there, Meloca Designs was born!
How long have you been cross stitching for?
I first cross stitched in primary school and did it on and off all through my childhood. So, for about 20 years.
What is your go to/ favourite thread colour for stitches?
I have two favourite colours that I absolutely cannot pick between. One is DMC’s 744 pale yellow shade, and the other is DMC’s 3846 bright turquoise/blue. You can find both of these colours in many of our kits! Yellow is my favourite colour and the blue is just gorgeous to look at!
What advice would you recommend to a beginner doing cross stitch?
My advice to new cross stitchers would be to just enjoy what you are doing. Don’t be too harsh on yourself in terms of neatness of the back or even the front. If you are having fun doing it then don’t worry about it! I know it’s easy to compare your work to others, but you will pick up tips and tricks the more you stitch and become an expert in no time!
Do you have any new upcoming kits being released soon?
Yes, we are currently working on a few new designs. Our first will be an exciting collaboration and another new release will be a Mandala Animal, similar to our popular Mandala Elephant but we won’t reveal the animal until its launch day in May/June. There will be a matching needle minder to accompany the kit too!
